Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian has been writing a book about the ancient barrows of England. It will document the treasures that she discovers in. A captivating letter encourages her to travel to the small village of Bewlay in the remote countryside of England. The author travels by train with her assistant one day later.
The mysterious person who called her to help is not there upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. The landowner is obnoxious and denies entry to her barrow. Locals fear this woman, who travels alone. wears trousers.
